October 2011 - Words that tear down - words that build up

The basic recipe for a good life
1. Peter 3, 8 to 10 For, He that would love life, And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from
evil, And his lips that they speak no guile
James, 3, 2:
For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to
bridle the whole body also.
Our words set the direction in our life, and free the fruit of the Spirit: Patience, self-control, patience,
generosity makes us the producer of good fruits. Proverbs says: "A word fitly spoken Is like apples of
gold in network of silver", and " A soft answer turneth away wrath; But a grievous word stirreth up
anger."

1. THERE IS POWER AND POWER IN WORDS
In Numb. 22 we read that King Balak is "ordering" the prophet Balaam to curse Israel.
Note! There was a strong belief in the power of the spoken word in the culture! But Balaam could
not curse Israel - why not? Numb. 23, 8 - 9 say that Balaam got a prophetic vision of the cross. Bible
Researchers say that the formation in the terrain was shaped so that the camp of Israel was shaped
like a image of a cross. The prophet saw "him" = Jesus! He would not curse the people of God.
Matt 5:22
We should not speak ill of, nor curse the people God has created! All people are people that Jesus
gave his life for! The one who talks badly about another person, is against God!

2. WORDS OF THE HUMAN
NRK (Norwegian television) had a case involving public bullying. You take the right and say what
one thinks without considering the one that is involved. Politicians, comedians, and participants in
debates talk without a filter; hurt, characterize and "beat" by words. But the Bible says:
Col 4, 6 Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt.
Ephesians 4: 29 Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for edifying as
the need may be.

3. THE WORD IS JESUS - HE IS THE WORD OF FAITH!
John 1, 14 says that the Word was Spirit (God) and God became man; Jesus. In other words: the word
was invisible, but became visible. Similarly, our words are invisible (abstract), but has creativity (the
ability to be specific)!
Word creates reactions: Smile, joy, sorrow - but the word also has the power to transforme lifes
(God's word).
God's word in your mouth has creative power, when it is connected by faith in your heart and is
confessed! Speak words of faith and the good confession into your situation. Faith in God's word is a
choice - not an emotion. We choose to believe in God's Word every day!

FOR CONVERSATION:
1) In which way is it power in the spoken words?
2) Can you give examples from your own life where words and confessions have been important?
3) Why is it so important for us as Christians to have a right confession - to confess God's word?
