April 2012 - What Jesus did with our sin, guilt, fear and death. part 1 - Sin and guilt

On Palm Sunday, Jesus rode towards Jerusalem. He was lauded as the Messiah. The Jews were
waiting for the Messiah. The political party, the Zealots, expected the Messiah to be a political
liberator who would restore Israel politically. Everyone expected the Messiah to lead Israel back to
the heyday of King David. But Jesus didn't come as a ruler, but as a servant, in order to serve, and
he showed this by riding on a lowly animal, a colt. Jesus said, "The Son of Man did not come to be
served, but to serve and to lay down his life as a ransom for many". Jesus' death and resurrection
was payment, a ransom which had consequences for 4 areas of our lives:

1. JESUS DIED FOR OUR SIN
Why did Jesus need to die? In order to answer that, we need to ask, «What is man's greatest
problem? Sin - man missed the mark. Rom 3:23 "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of
God."Jesus tells us what sin is: Joh.16.9 «Sin is that they don't believe in me».

Through sin, man became a slave to sin and was bound by a gigantic debt he was unable to pay! Man
became a slave of his creditor, the devil. BUT: Jesus paid the debt: Col 2, 14, "having cancelled the
charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away,
nailing it to the cross. " Jesus built a bridge between God and man. The horizontal axis of the cross
symbolizes the bridge from God to man. Jesus paid for our sin with his life.

2. JESUS DIED FOR OUR GUILT
Guilt is a subjective feeling. Many live under self-condemnation and guilt. Guilt can dominate one's
life. Proverbs 21, 8: "The way of a guilty man is perverse; but as for the pure, his work is right." The
good news is: Jesus took our guilt on himself so we could go free!
Isaiah 53, 6: "All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And
the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all."

For discussion:

1) Have you felt the burden of sin? What does it mean for you that Jesus died for your sin?
2) Have you experienced feelings of guilt? What does it mean for you that Jesus died for your feelings
of guilt?
3) Do you know someone who needs to hear this? How will you approach the matter and share the
good news with them?
